In an innovative effort to tackle rising electricity prices, the Punjab government launched the Roshan Gharana scheme. The new program aims to install solar systems in 4.5 million homes across the province, providing significant financial relief to consumers burdened by high energy bills.
How
Roshan Gharana Scheme Works
The Roshan Gharana initiative enables households to
get solar panels through affordable installments. The size of the solar system
each home gets depends on its monthly electricity consumption. Those who use up
to 50 units per month will get a 500-watt solar system at no cost. Households
using 50 to 100 units will get a 1 kW system. For customers with monthly usage
of 200 to 300 units, an 1100 watt system will be installed, with larger systems
available for higher usage levels.
To be eligible for this plan, households should have an
annual electricity consumption of up to 500 units and be a tax filer. Residents
benefiting from government assistance programs or those with a history of power
theft will not be eligible.
Simple
registration and flexible payment
Signing up for Roshan Gharana Scheme is easy.
Interested residents send their identity number and electricity bill reference
number to 8800. Eligible households will be selected through lottery and given
an opportunity to purchase a solar system through Bank of Punjab or National
Bank.
The payment structure is designed to be flexible and
manageable. Customers will pay 25 percent of the cost of the solar system
upfront, interest-free, followed by five years of interest-free installments
added to their electricity bills. For those using more than 500 units, the
government will cover 75 percent interest.
A step
towards sustainable energy
The Punjab government plans to start installing these solar
systems between September and October. This marks an important step towards
promoting cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions. By reducing dependence
on conventional energy sources, the Roshan Gharana scheme is
expected to reduce pressure on the electricity grid and generate long-term cost
savings for participating households.
In addition to individual benefits, the plan is poised to
drive broader economic development and contribute to environmental protection
across the province. The Roshan Gharana initiative represents a
forward-thinking approach to energy management and promises a brighter and more
sustainable future for the residents of Punjab.
